P/N 2125 (Microscope and mount only)—US$750.00

The price for Lathe is not included, it depends on your choice of Lathe

Sherline now offers a high quality microscope and mount for the Sherline lathe. The stereo microscope allows very close inspection of the part while it is being cut with variable magnification from 5x to 100x. It can be purchased separately for use on any existing Sherline lathe or it can be ordered along with the purchase of a new lathe. (Click on photo for larger image.)

The purpose of the microscope and mount

There are a number of circumstances that might make extremely close inspection of the cutting of a part on the lathe important. First of all, this mount can be of use to those whose failing eyesight makes it difficult for them to work on parts. It is also useful for those with normal eyesight who work on extremely small parts. In addition, those who are tasked with working on very high value parts where a mistake can be costly will want to have the best possible view of what they are doing to assure a perfect cut the first time and every time. Added to the value of the purchase of this accessory is the fact that the microscope itself comes as a complete unit with its own base in addition to the lathe mount base, so it can be used apart from the lathe for other inspection purposes in the shop or lab.

Mounted to a Sherline mill.

What you see here is that the Microscope is mounted to Sherline Mill similar to arrangements that you see on the Sherline Lathe in the other illustration. The only difference between them is the mounting fixture. When you buy the Micros Scope and the mount for the Mill and if you want to install the same Microscope on to the lathe, you need to buy only the Mount for the Lathe. The Microscope is a stand-alone unit capable of being used as a standard Microscope alone. When you need to use it on a lathe or a mill, you have to separate the Microscope from its Standard Fitting and fix the appropriate mount pertaining to Sherline Lathe or Sherline Mill.

About the Sherline Lathe Video...

The Author has put together a professional quality video that answers virtually all the questions first time users have about setting up and using a Sherline lathe. The over 3-1/2 hour video takes you from mounting the machine to a board to aligning the headstock. He uses the example of turning a test bar to check for straightness. He then goes through facing and boring, making a tight-fitting hole for the test bar as a sample job. You also get to see how he goes about using a micrometer and caliper to measure the results as he goes along. Setting the height of the cutting tool, holding the workpiece and how to grind a lathe tool are covered as well. Mike also covers backlash and how to deal with it and how to disassemble and clean a chuck as well as demonstrating hand-wheel technique and how to use the optional adjustable zero hand-wheels. Other common tasks like how to cut tapers and how to turn an eccentric using an independent 4-jaw chuck are covered.

Special segments on accessories include use of the steady rest, follower rest, live center, center drills and doing milling jobs on the lathe using either the vertical milling table or the more versatile vertical milling column. The basics of using the threading attachment are also covered. You are also reminded at the appropriate times of proper safety procedures so you will learn to work safely.

The Sherline Model 4500 lathe is used in all the examples, the techniques used here could be applied to any other Sherline lathe.
